Social work is a helping profession dedicated to supporting individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities as they face life’s most difficult challenges.

Grounded in values such as service, justice, dignity and the worth of every person, social workers strive to empower others and advocate for equitable social systems.

At Lancaster Bible College, we believe the role of a social worker is both profoundly practical and deeply rooted in Christian service.

The Heart of Social Work

According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), practitioners assist people “by helping them cope with issues in their everyday lives, deal with their relationships, and solve personal and family problems.” Likewise, the NASW Code of Ethics notes that the “primary mission of social work is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty.”

This broad mission reflects the diversity of settings and concerns social workers address, from child welfare and mental health to community development and policy reform.

With two academic programs offered at the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels, LBC views social work through a biblical lens that embraces both compassionate service and rigorous professional preparation.

Our programs integrate coursework in social work practice and human behavior with Bible courses and a theological foundation to equip graduates, intellectually, spiritually and practically, to make a difference in the world.

Levels and Areas of Practice

Social work is a dynamic profession because of the variety of ways professionals can serve. Social workers operate on three primary practice levels:

  • Micro Practice: One-on-one work with individuals and families. This can include counseling, support during crises, case management, and helping clients navigate complex systems such as healthcare or child welfare.
  • Mezzo Practice: Work with groups and community programs. Social workers at this level might lead group therapy, facilitate support groups or coordinate community outreach efforts.
  • Macro Practice: Efforts to influence larger systems, including policy advocacy, program development and organizational leadership that aims to create broad social change.

These levels illustrate how social workers help at both the individual and societal levels, always to promote human well-being and justice.

Where Social Workers Serve

Two women share a laughSocial workers are found in nearly every community across the United States. Their roles span a wide range of environments, such as:

  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Schools and educational systems
  • Nonprofit agencies
  • Government social services
  • Community and faith-based organizations
  • Mental health and substance abuse treatment centers

This diversity reflects the flexibility of the profession — social workers tailor their skills to meet the specific needs of the people and systems they serve.

Social Work Education and Training at Lancaster Bible College

To prepare students for these complex and vital roles, Lancaster Bible College offers comprehensive social work education at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

LBC’s on-campus Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program equips students with foundational knowledge and practical skills.

The curriculum blends classroom study, biblical integration and significant field education — including over 480 hours of supervised service in social service settings.

This ensures students graduate with hands-on experience that bridges theory and practice.

For those seeking advanced preparation, the Master of Social Work (MSW) at LBC is offered fully online with specializations that deepen expertise in areas such as clinical social work and advanced generalist practice.

Through advanced coursework, cohort learning and field experiences, MSW students learn to lead and serve effectively across diverse practice settings.
